What Is Love?

Daily Prompt: I Want to Know What Love Is

We each have many types of love relationships — parents, children, spouses, friends. And they’re not always with people; you may love an animal, or a place. Is there a single idea or definition that runs through all the varieties of “love”?

Love is something that makes you happy and free. It’s not based on gender, race, gender or other peoples’ thoughts. Done right, it makes you the happiest person in the world. Done wrong and you’re hurt for the rest of your life. There are highs and lows. Basically, love is a roller coaster. It’s scary and confusing and makes you all nervous with butterflies in your stomach. Or it’s a knowing that you’ll be happy at the place or with the person/animal.

I think there’s at least one thing every person loves. For many people, it’s their spouse. For others, it’s music, reading, stamp collecting, blogging, or running. Some have that special place that never ceases to blow them away. I have one of those- WW. WW stands for a place where my friends and I went in 6th grade to escape everyone else in the grade. All my first best friends… So many good memories. Some of us have drifted off into different friend groups, and as sad as that is for me, I’m learning to accept it. We barely went there in 7th grade, and we only went once in 8th grades. I miss that time so much, but there’s nothing I can change. I can’t make people be best friends with me again and do all the same things. All we have are memories, but good ones. It’s like the How I Met Your Mother episode where Ted first meets Victoria.

No. No unless. No e-mails, no phone numbers, not even names. Tonight, we’ll make a memory that will never be tarnished. Then, when we’re old and gray, we’ll look back on this moment… and it’ll be perfect.

So I’ll admit I have a thing about nostalgia. I miss elementary school and Disney Channel and Nickelodeon and The Click Five. So what? It makes me feel happy, and isn’t that what love is supposed to do- make you feel happy?

Friends deserve a paragraph all to itself.

So friends are the ones who are supposed to be there for you during your ups and downs, your failing love life, and personal problems. But sooner or later we have doubts. Why is she being so mean to me? How come he stopped talking to me? When your friends aren’t there, you might just be miserable. And then there are times you have to deal with the people who call themselves “friends”. If they’re friends, they’re supposed to stick with you through the thick and thin. After reading a thought-provoking post about friendship from the blog Lifeless & Inspired, I’ve been inspired to write a post. This post is coming soon- definitely before the end of the school year. But how are we supposed to know who’s really there? Does it count as friendship if you’re uncomfortable and can’t be honest with the person?

Since tomorrow is Mother’s Day, it’s a perfect time for a shout-out to my lovely parents. I love them so much, and now after completing an Economics project, I’ve learned how much I cost. Children are expensive, I now understand. They’re time-consuming, energy-draining, and demanding. But you care for them because you love them. I want to thank my mom (and my dad) for supporting me through my 14 years (and counting) on this earth as a crazy dreamer.

Love is patient. Love is kind. Love does not boast. Love is not proud. Love does not dishonor others. Love is not self-seeking. Love is not easily angered. Love keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil. Love rejoices with the truth. Love always trusts. Love always protects. Love always hopes. Love always perseveres. Jamie and Landon had it right the entire time.

Love isn’t pining after someone who doesn’t even know your name (sadly, this is me). It isn’t marrying someone for their last name or their wealth. It’s wanting to spend the rest of your life: with someone, being somewhere, or doing something.

*Since I didn’t do Music Mondays this past Monday, I’m just putting a few extra songs today.
